CHALLENGES
Designing along the Delaware shoreline meant working with sand, salt air, and shifting conditions. The landscape needed to remain both beautiful and durable, with careful attention to drainage, irrigation, and plant health in the sandy soil.
THE PLAN
Our design team set out to create a landscape that feels effortless and enduring. The plan balanced structure with softness, using permeable materials for drainage, resilient coastal plantings for year-round interest, and lighting that highlights the home’s architecture and its connection to the sea. The goal was a space that feels naturally integrated and built for lasting comfort.
THE RESULTS
What began as open sand is now a refined coastal retreat.
The transformation started with a reinforced foundation, where layers of additional stone stabilized the paver driveway and created lasting structure in the sandy soil. Each planting bed was amended with topsoil to help retain moisture, supported by an efficient irrigation system that keeps the landscape thriving in coastal air. A paver driveway and stone entry columns define the arrival experience, while cobble edging and riverstone gravel soften transitions between the home and the dunes.
Palms, crepe myrtles, and ornamental grasses add height and movement, while boxwood and native shrubs lend structure and evergreen color. Each species was chosen to thrive in sandy conditions and resist deer, ensuring the landscape remains vibrant and protected throughout the seasons.
As daylight fades, soft lighting reveals the texture of the materials and the form of the plantings. The firepit near the dunes becomes the focal point, offering a quiet place to unwind and watch the horizon shift from gold to blue. The result is a landscape that balances elegance and endurance, capturing the rhythm and beauty of life by the sea.
